Our Approach to Presentation Of Writing

Writing forms a significant part of all subjects across the curriculum. We pride ourselves on good presentation skills in English and therefore we teach children at Krishna Avanti Primary School to form letters correctly from the start of their educational journey. We aim for high standards of presentation across all curriculum areas.

Using our Twinkl phonics approach, we embed letter formation into every phonics lesson from EYFS to Year 2.  As children are introduced to each letter of the alphabet, a letter formation rhyme linked to a mnemonic is introduced. An animated ‘magic pencil’ models the correct letter formation.

When children are confident with the correct letter formations, we begin to introduce cursive script. We know that using a cursive script helps most children become more confident, fluent writers and helps improve spelling.

Our consistent aim is for all our children to develop into skilful and imaginative writers across the curriculum. Writing is organised around a clear learning sequence where-by children study and engage with a high-quality model text and practice the grammar skills necessary for the specific genre, before progressing into extended writing and editing independently.

We encourage all children to be able to read and write in cursive script and reward all children when they make progress in reading and writing across all curriculum areas.

Children can receive their pen licence when they have met specific criteria consistently. Children are introduced to the pen licence criteria from Year 2. If children satisfy these criteria, they will receive a certificate and a pen. Children will then be able to use a blue pen (provided by the school) across all curriculum subjects except for Maths and Art.
