Online Safety is a very important part of children’s education in today’s digital world and is embedded in their learning at Avanti Fields. The internet is amazing. Young people can play, learn, create and connect – opening up a whole world of exciting possibilities. But with the digital world changing all the time, do you understand your child’s cyber culture, the way in which he/she uses the internet and mobile devices and do you know how you can make sure your child’s safe whilst online?

We know that young people may face a number of situations online and as parents, carers and professionals we need to help protect them from harm. To help all parents with keeping up to date with the latest websites, apps and ‘trends’, Avanti Fields is committed to sharing E-Safety information with you through information evenings, parental workshops, our website and parent email.

There are some links below which you can use to help set up parental controls on your children’s phones, laptops, tablets and computers. There are also good links below which explains the different risks young people face when online and some top tips to recognise if you child is experiencing any form of cyber bullying or participating in risk taking behaviour.

It is important to talk to your children about their experiences online and whether they know who to report any worries or concerns to about things they see online. As parents, you can also report any concerns online or alternatively by speaking to your child’s Head of Year.

To help support you with these conversations with your child. Childnet recommends the following list of questions:

  • Ask your children to tell you about the sites they like to visit and what they enjoy doing online.
  • Ask them about how they stay safe online. What tips do they have for you, and where did they learn them? What is OK and not OK to share?
  • Ask them if they know where to go for help, where to find the safety advice, privacy settings and how to report or block on the services they use.
  • Encourage them to help. Perhaps they can show you how to do something better online or they might have a friend who would benefit from their help and support.
  • Think about how you use the internet as a family. What could you do to get more out of the internet together and further enjoy your lives online.

The following sites contain information regarding the usage of social media, how to report online abuse and guidance for parents to ensure children are kept safe.
