Last year, Avanti House Primary School, with the support of the British Science Association had an enlivening science week with lots of planned and unplanned activities:
Avanti House Primary School celebrated Science Week from 19th to 23rd June 2023. This is an annual event at school when children reflect on how science relates to our everyday life. The theme of this Science Week was ‘Connections’ which was explored in many different ways throughout the school. The children carried out different practical investigations, from launching rockets to making moon dials. We are proud to share, and showcase all the exciting things we did during the week.
Science Week – EYFS
BRIDGE BLUNDER – This activity is designed to get you thinking about the connections between weights, forces and measures. Reception children were challenged to build a model bridge that supports heavy weights. They had to test the best design for a bridge, and think about which shapes are the strongest. Children engaged in investigating how to manipulate the paper to make it stronger.
Science Week – Year 1
The children used their computing skills to think about and research questions about where specific vegetables grow. The children thought about whether the vegetable grew under ground, above the ground or on vines and then worked together to find their answers.
Science Week – Year 2
During Science Week – Year 2 focussed on the phases of the moon, a topic full of misconception and wonder. The children were introduced through the beautiful story of Moon Man by Tomi Ungerer, a story of the man who lives in the moon who comes to Earth. The children started with their prediction of what the moon’s phases might be. They then set up and carried out a simple investigation using highly-technical resources of a torch, hula-hoop, sticky tape and tennis ball to see for themselves how the light of sun and the absence of the light gives the moon it’s appearance.
Science Week – Year 3
For British Science week, the children worked collaboratively to create their own volcano. They learnt all about the tectonic plates under our feet and how volcanoes are formed through the movement of tectonics plates. They used their prior knowledge from their Rocks topic at the beginning of the year to help them understand the new learning as well as using this project to enrich their learning of our new English book “Escape from Pompeii”
Science Week – Year 4
During Science Week, Year 4 linked their learning to our unit of ‘Habitats.’ First the children, investigated and created difference food chains and food webs. Then, they researched the importance of bats and barn owls within food chains and how they impact biodiversity. Finally, they wrote persuasive letters to a farmer to convince him not to knock down his barn!
Science Week – Year 5
This British science week, Year 5 had a super exciting water rocket workshop! The children looked at how they could build a rocket using materials to launch in our school playground! Year 5’s worked in groups and showed excellent teamwork to follow instructions on building their rocket. They had to consider the impact of many forces and angle of launching in order for their rocket to be a success. As well as this, the pupils applied their writing skills to write a report on the investigation they carried out during this workshop. It was great fun and thrilling to see the rockets launch at great speed and height! The children are excited for what next year will bring during British Science week!
Science Week – Year 6
Year 6 planned and carried out an investigation to understand how temperature affects yeast activity. They worked scientifically and considered what factors were needed to make the investigation a fair test as well as what the dependant (amount of carbon dioxide) and independant variable (temperature) would be in the experiment.
