On Monday 10th September, the year 6 students had a workshop about evolution and a palaeontologist came to talk to us about fossils. A palaeontologist is a person who studies fossils and finds out how they are made, where they come from and how old they are. Dr Helen (the palaeontologist) brought in some fossils to show us and she organised them into different groups. We had to mark on a chart what we thought each fossil was in terms of its type and age. There were so many different types of fossils that we got to touch including dinosaurs fossils that were about 50 million years old!
We also learnt about evolution. Each of our tables represented a time period showing the evolution from cells to worms to fish to amphibians to reptiles to birds to mammals and finally humans. She also explained DNA really well by demonstrating how we have similar genes from our parents and how we were once all related. Toady was one of the most interesting workshops we’ve ever had and I learnt so much.
