Principals Update

Throughout her 70-year reign, the longest of any monarch in the world, the Queen exemplified the very best of public service, compassion and devotion to duty. For the majority of people in the UK, she was the Queen they grew up with, a rock of stability in an ever-changing world. Few will forget her words of solace during the Covid crisis, “We will meet again.” The Queen lived a life of service, standing for the best of British values, providing grace and consistency in an uncertain world.

DfE announced that all schools will be closed for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral on Monday, September 19 2022 which has been formally declared as a national bank holiday for the entirety of the UK.

School life

This week has seen our nursery and reception students begin their regular timetable of learning after our initial 2-week settling in period. It has been wonderful to see the positive relationships form between our youngest students and their teachers and teaching assistants. They have begun learning early phonics and have begun parts of our bespoke curriculum such as yoga.

Our secondary pupils have enjoyed our after school clubs provision. Details were emailed out last week, and students were able to sign up with the clubs leads during school. Secondary clubs run from 3:30pm – 4:30pm Tuesday to Thursday. This term we are trialling that students sign up for the entire term, up until Christmas. Towards the end of the Autumn term, we will be asking for feedback about whether we continue to run clubs on a termly or a half-termly basis.

I am proud to announce that the school will be opening a multi-faith prayer room for staff and students next week. We believe that it is an important part of our inclusive nature to ensure that students and staff from a non-Hindu background have a space that is available to them for worship during the school day.

The multi-faith space will be open between 12:50pm – 2:35pm (Lunch A and Lunch B) for any staff or students to use. If your child would like to be involved in providing recommendations on how we can further enhance this space, please have them speak to Mr Gajjar or Miss Bardsley.

Student achievements

It is wonderful that many of our students engage in a range of extracurricular and super curricular activities outside of school ranging from sport to learning languages.  This week Rohan Bhagat (9 Earth) participated in the Local British Karting Championships (BIKC) and finished 1st in the race. This is a fantastic achievement progressing into the Regionals next week in Leeds. We cannot wait to hear how Rohan gets on and we wish him the best of luck!

We would also like to congratulate Tanveer Singh (10 Earth) and Diljot Mann (9 Air) for achieving brilliant GCSE Punjabi results. They studied Punjabi at the Guru Tegh Bahadur Gurdwara Punjabi School and worked extremely hard to sit the GCSE Punjabi exam early.

We are very proud of all of our students, who continue to demonstrate the Avanti values in and outside of school and continue to develop themselves. Please continue to share your children’s successes and achievements outside of school with us as we love to hear about these and inspire our whole school community.

Absence

To report an absence to the school, parents should contact us by 8:00am (primary) and 8.30am (secondary)

Email: [email protected]
Phone: 0116 326 6813 (Option 1 to leave a voicemail)

Please remember to state your child’s full name, tutor group and reason for absence. If your child is unwell, please could you give a brief description of the symptoms.

All education research highlights how crucial it is to a child’s academic progress and wellbeing they attend school , on time, all of the time. Therefore, a reminder that it is important that families organise events or holidays outside of school time to ensure that their child is at school as often as possible.

The school works closely with the Education Welfare Officer at LCC, and we do seek to ensure that any requests for authorised absence are dealt with on a case-by-case basis, in a sensitive manner. However, the school can never authorise a family holiday or a trip abroad to visit family members during term time.

This academic year, families will have two weeks at the October half-term, three weeks at Christmas and two weeks at Easter for extended family holidays. Please do ensure that if booking holidays, they fall within the holiday periods.
