Principals Update

Welcome back after the Easter holidays – we are looking forward to starting the summer term. I hope that families enjoyed the (few) sunny days over the break and that your children have returned to school refreshed and ready for learning.

This week has seen the school starting to engage with prospective and confirmed new parents; we held nursery promotion and year 6 incoming parent support events on Wednesday that were well attended. You may be aware that there are currently more secondary pupils within Leicester than there are school places. To support students accessing education, the school this year has gone over our published admissions number of 180 per year group, up to 186 places for Year 7, 8 and 9. Out of the 18 additional places, 14 of those places have been filled. For next academic year, the school received 420 applications for 186 Year 7 places and 93 applications for 60 Reception places. It is lovely to see the school so popular among the community.

Our next phase of admissions will be for our nursery. We understand that parents won’t know their funding allocation until June, however, if you are interested in being one of the first to know about our nursery promotion events, please complete this form. Our nursery offers 52 full-time 30h places, or an equivalent number of 15h places and we are currently full. Many of our nursery pupils will be transitioning to reception, however we anticipate that places will be limited.

Finally, I hope that you have seen the exciting news from our PTFA – we have secured funding for a community garden. To celebrate this news, the PTFA will be hosting a Community Mela on Saturday 29th April. Please look out for details further in the bulletin.

We’re pleased to tell you that we’re organising a Community Mela and Fun Day on Saturday 29th April, at Avanti Fields School.

The event will feature lots of children’s activities such as a bouncy castle, stalls, workshops, demos, music, sport, dance and of course, delicious food and snacks!
The FREE event, sponsored by Pukaar Group & Leicester Times, is open to all including the wider community, and takes place at the school from 11am till 4pm. We’d love to see you there! And please bring along your family and friends!

The Mela will also be a chance for us all to celebrate a MASSIVE success story for not only the PTFA, but the entire local community. We have secured £26,700 grant from Severn Trent Community Fund to start a community garden. To read further, please click here.

Follow us on social media to be among the first to know about developments with the project! Just click on these links: Our Instagram account is avantifields_ptfa and we’re also on Facebook.

All money raised on the day by the PTFA will go back directly to the school, so you’ll be helping us to help our pupils! If you would like to have an indoor stall at the event for your own business, organisation or charity, or wish to explore any sponsorship/donation opportunities, please get in touch with us at [email protected].

Parents evening

As we are now in our final term for the academic year we will have a third parents evening to celebrate and share with you your child’s successes and areas of development.

We have decided to have our parents’ evenings face to face so that you can see your child’s learning environment and some of their pieces of work.

Each parents meeting will last no longer than 10 minutes to ensure everyone gets the same amount of time. The parents evening meeting will cover the following-
How has your child has progressed since the last meeting?
What have we noticed they are excelling in?
What are your child’s next steps and how you can support this at home?

Secondary News

Year 7 Visit  to local residential home

Last term some of our year 7 students gave up their lunch time to visit, spend time at a local residential home , reading with the residents. All Students involved showed their commitment to the Avanti Way and we are so proud of them for the Respect and Empathy these students demonstrated in abundance.

Manraj

“It was interesting and liked listening to the stories residents told about their lives.

People and staff were kind and welcoming into their home.”

Dhruvi

“Enjoyed reading and hearing about what they have read about.

They asked a lot of questions and enjoyed telling the residents about herself.

Very relaxing experience as the residents were very welcoming.”

Zariyon

“Enjoyed reading and showing the residents pictures in the books they were reading.

Liked when residents talked about when they were their age, and the cookies were nice and fresh.”

Gavinjit

“I liked that we read to elderly people who were kind and sweet and the milk and cookies were very nice.”

Somerville on Instagram: “The more time the young and the elderly spend together, the more both parties benefit. Children have a warm and infectious energy, which can help to bring so much joy to the elderly. In fact, research shows that connecting youths with seniors can help to boost confidence, increase communication and improve memory. With that in mind, here at Somerville, we connected with the local school to arrange for their young children to come and read to our residents (or be read to!) The afternoon was a huge hit, with massive smiles, uplifting cheer & infectious enthusiasm concluding with chef made cookies & good ol milk!

Year 7 Girls Futsal

I am so proud of our Year 7 Girls Futsal Team for their incredible performance in the East Leicestershire Futsal Competition. The girls played against 6 other schools and came second with a huge 17 points. They had no time for training with the competition being in the first week back but their raw talent and skill came through and they won all their games except one. We had high scoring games and Priyanshi, Keah and Kareena made a strong trio to get past. The girls should be extremely happy with themselves and I am really excited to see what they can do next year! Well done to all the girls who played; Keah P, Priyanshi P, Kareena P, Kalindi C, Pia M, Prisha P, Simrandeep B, Yamee P and Arti P. Player of the match went to Priyanshi P who scored a massive 10 goals!

Absence

To report an absence to the school, parents should contact us by 8:00am (primary) and 8.30am (secondary)

Email: [email protected]
Phone: 0116 326 6813 (Option 1 to leave a voicemail)

Please remember to state your child’s full name, tutor group and reason for absence. If your child is unwell, please could you give a brief description of the symptoms.

All education research highlights how crucial it is to a child’s academic progress and wellbeing they attend school , on time, all of the time. Therefore, a reminder that it is important that families organise events or holidays outside of school time to ensure that their child is at school as often as possible.

The school works closely with the Education Welfare Officer at LCC, and we do seek to ensure that any requests for authorised absence are dealt with on a case-by-case basis, in a sensitive manner. However, the school can never authorise a family holiday or a trip abroad to visit family members during term time.

This academic year, families will have two weeks at the October half-term, three weeks at Christmas and two weeks at Easter for extended family holidays. Please do ensure that if booking holidays, they fall within the holiday periods.
