Principals Update

As the school year starts to wind down, we have a number of activities planned over the coming weeks, including the Leicester City Ratha Yatra this Sunday, our school-based Ratha Yatra festival day, the Pre-school graduation, as well as a range of in-school activities to celebrate and reward our pupils.

Last night we hosted our third annual Sports Award evening and it was lovely to see so many of our pupils recognised for their participation and contribution to extra-curricular activities. A full list of winners will be shared in next week’s bulletin, however I want to take this opportunity to congratulate Anaiya D for winning the Avanti Award.

Summer Reading Challenge – Leicester Libraries

Summer Reading Challenge 2024

Dear all,

Marvellous Makers is this year’s summer reading challenge with Leicester libraries.

The challenge encourages children to use their local library and maintain their reading habit through the long summer break and aims to mitigate the dip in performance associated with a long break from reading, that many children experience in the new school year.

Starting Saturday 29 June until the 15 September, children aged 0 to 15 years can sign up to take part and complete the six-book challenge.  A prize of £100 of books will be awarded to the Leicester school with the highest percentage of children finishing the challenge (numbers recorded by Leicester libraries staff).

In Leicester, we also have a challenge for adults to promote good role modelling.  Adults, you can participate by reading six books for a chance to win £30 worth of books!

Leicester libraries’ offer is enhanced with a range of free activities for the whole family, all designed to promote reading for pleasure and the joy of sharing books and stories.

To support schools, there is a short film and assembly presentation to use to encourage your pupils to take part in the challenge.

For further information about our full programme of activities please visit leicester.gov.uk/summerreadingchallenge.

We hope you will join us in encouraging your children to keep reading this summer.

RRSA Article of the Week: Article 32

Governments must protect children from economic exploitation and work that is dangerous or might harm their health, development or education. Governments must set a minimum age for children to work and ensure that work conditions are safe and appropriate.

The focus surrounding these Articles is ‘World Day Against Child Labour’, which is on the 12th of June. This day is intended to promote and encourage the growing worldwide movement against child labour. You may want to talk about why children should be protected from working, especially in dangerous conditions. Some possible reasons include:

  • Their family should have a good enough standard of living without them working.
  • Children should be in education.
  • They should have time to be a child and have all their rights.
  • They should have time to rest and play, and to develop their talents

Here is an activity you can do at home.

Discuss and explore how children ‘help out’ with ‘jobs’ at home and in school. What would it be like to do these all the time and have no time for play or learning?

Year 9: National Holocaust Centre visit

On 25/06/26 the History department took 50 year 9 students to the National Holocaust Centre. Here the students were involved in several workshops ran by the centre’s holocaust experts. Central to this were discussions around Jewish identity, why they were targeted and what the holocaust actually looked like for these people. Students also accesses their underground exhibition which gave them a walkthrough of the events and several testimonies from Holocaust survivors. The final part of the day saw us go through the memorial gardens an pay tribute to the children who were the victims of the Holocaust. The centre were very complimentary about how engaged and well mannered our students were and look forward to welcoming us back again in the future.

Year 10: De Montfort University Trip

On June 20th, our enthusiastic Year 10 Design and Technology group was granted an exceptional opportunity to visit De Montfort University and witness their awe-inspiring degree show.

The students were exposed to a wide array of curriculums, ranging from the structural beauty of Architecture to the imaginative realm of Video production, the aesthetic appeal of Graphic design, the immersive world of Game design, the trendy domain of Fashion, and the intricate field of Mechanical Engineering, among others. They were able to explore a diverse collection of degree work spanning across the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd years, as well as master’s work.

Our Avanti students had a thrilling time testing out student games, analysing art pieces, and even trying their hands at flight simulators. This allowed them to delve into various specialisms within the design field, while also interacting closely with the dedicated staff and students of De Montfort University.

This visit served as a golden opportunity for our students to witness the creative atmosphere of a university, where they got to experience innovative methods like Virtual Reality and Green Screens.

In summary, our students were exposed to a higher level of extraordinary work, which has undoubtedly inspired them to strive for greater heights in their future endeavours, especially in their forthcoming coursework.

Year 11 GCSE students Art Work

Avanti Fields Art Department Exhibition: Summer 2024

Welcome to our first Avanti Fields online Art Exhibition. Over the final weeks of the Summer Term the Parent bulletins will feature an Exhibition of our student’s Art work. Each week we will showcase work from a different year group. We are proud to begin our series of online exhibitions with the work of our Yr11 GCSE students. This exhibition features at least 2 pieces of work from each Yr11 GCSE student. Over 2 years our GCSE Students produce at least one coursework unit, culminating in a final piece on the theme of Our World or Journeys. You will also see work from their Exam projects. Students begin their Exam for Art in January by responding to a theme given to them in the Art Exam paper. Over the following 10 weeks the students will produce a sketchbook of work culminating in a final piece produced over a 10 hour period around Easter time. The results of which can be seen here. The exam themes this year included Space, Gardens, Shopping and Celebrity. You might like to guess which pieces relate to which theme and what inspired the artists? The diversity of our student’s work can be seen in their personalised responses to given themes, the range of media used and the range of ability of the students. We are proud to enter the work of all our GCSE students for the exhibition and celebrate the diversity of outcome, experience and ability. Well done to all our Art students for their efforts. We hope you enjoy viewing the work.

Coming next week …. A selection of Yr10 Artwork from their ‘Our World’ project.

Every week we will upload exciting Art works from our Year 11 GCSE  students keep checking.

Thank you

Mrs Winter, Mrs Marshall, Mrs Walshe, Mr Westwood and the Art Students of Avanti Fields.

Absence

To report an absence to the school, parents should contact us by 8:00am (primary) and 8.30am (secondary)

Email: [email protected]
Phone: 0116 326 6813 (Option 1 to leave a voicemail)

Please remember to state your child’s full name, tutor group and reason for absence. If your child is unwell, please could you give a brief description of the symptoms.

All education research highlights how crucial it is to a child’s academic progress and wellbeing they attend school , on time, all of the time. Therefore, a reminder that it is important that families organise events or holidays outside of school time to ensure that their child is at school as often as possible.

The school works closely with the Education Welfare Officer at LCC, and we do seek to ensure that any requests for authorised absence are dealt with on a case-by-case basis, in a sensitive manner. However, the school can never authorise a family holiday or a trip abroad to visit family members during term time.

This academic year, families will have two weeks at the October half-term, three weeks at Christmas and two weeks at Easter for extended family holidays. Please do ensure that if booking holidays, they fall within the holiday periods.
