Principals Update

Today is the ‘National Offer Day’ for incoming Year 7 pupils and their families. We want to take this opportunity to congratulate and welcome our incoming cohort to Avanti Fields School. Detailed information regarding our transition programme will be shared with all applicants on Monday 4th March.

This week school staff attended the AST planned Ethos INSET day which focussed on how we can create spaces for meaningful dialogue. Staff had opportunities to practice active listening, understand what it takes to build trust quickly within a small group of people and begin thinking about how our training can be used to launch ‘sanga’ sessions for our pupils.

Next week has our annual World Book Day activities planned for both Primary and Secondary pupils on Thursday 7th March. I am looking forward to seeing the literary costumes that our students come dressed in!

Hand, foot and mouth disease

Hand, foot and mouth disease is a common infection that causes mouth ulcers and spots on the hands and feet.

It’s most common in young children – particularly those under 10 – but can affect older children and adults as well.

Hand, foot and mouth disease can be unpleasant, but it will usually clear up by itself within 7 to 10 days. You can normally look after yourself or your child at home.

The infection is not related to foot and mouth disease, which affects cattle, sheep and pigs.

Symptoms of hand, foot and mouth disease

The symptoms of hand, foot and mouth disease usually develop between 3 and 5 days after being exposed to the infection.

The first symptoms may include:

  • a high temperature (fever), usually around 38°C to 39°C (100.4-102.2°F)
  • a general sense of feeling unwell
  • loss of appetite
  • coughing
  • abdominal (tummy) pain
  • sore throat and mouth

Mouth ulcers

After 1 or 2 days, red spots appear on the tongue and inside the mouth.

These quickly develop into larger yellow-grey mouth ulcers with red edges.

The ulcers can be painful and make eating, drinking and swallowing difficult. They should pass within a week.

Spotty rash and blisters

Soon after the mouth ulcers appear, you’ll probably notice a rash made up of small, raised red spots on the skin.

These typically develop on the fingers, the backs or palms of the hand, the soles of the feet, and occasionally on the buttocks and groin.

The spots may then turn into small blisters with a grey centre.

The spots and blisters can sometimes be itchy or uncomfortable and typically last up to 10 days.

What to do if you or your child has hand, foot and mouth disease

If you have hand, foot and mouth disease, the best thing to do is to stay at home until you’re feeling better. There’s no cure for it, so you have to let it run its course. Please seek medical advice.

Year 9 National Space Centre trip

7th February 2024

We took 12 year 9 students to the National Space Centre in Leicester. The event was to look at how Mathematics is used in a space context. There were students from 7 other schools in the City of Leicester.

The students had a brief introduction about the day and then getting to know each other. They then undertook a maths trail inside the centre, looking at the all the presentations on offer at the National Space Centre. The students had an informative time looking at all the props used by astronauts in space. This was certainly an eye opener for all the students there! Some of the skills here were how young learners from different schools worked together to complete the Maths trail.

The students then had to work together to produce a space ‘house’ that would hold resources for visiting astronauts on a space station. Students had to make their model with jelly babies and match sticks! Students were in inter school groups – so it was great that our students performed well students from other schools. Some of our students were in the winning space ‘house’ group.

After lunch, students took part in an activity based on how countries looked after scare resources in terms of recycling and costs. This was an activity based on other schools competing. Our students did really well, and they seemed to enjoy the experience of trying to allocate valuable resources in a competing world, taking into account populations, cost of resources, timelines to name a few ideas to consider.

After that, students were given the opportunity to attend a lecture from a university professor. The lecture was based on Einstein and his ideas on motion. This was quite a difficult type of learning – a new experience really, however quite a bit of maths concept was covered. This included.

  • Speed, distance, time including graphs.
  • Pythagoras Theorem
  • Motion in 2D plane
  • Velocity and average speed
  • Equations of motion.

All our students were a credit to the school and themselves and I know they had a lovely day out exploring maths in a space context.

Celebrating Mathematical Minds of Avanti Fields School

8 of our students from year 10 recently participated in the prestigious Regional Maths Feast event, marking a significant milestone in our commitment to excellence in mathematical education. This annual competition draws the brightest young mathematicians from Leicestershire, challenging them with problems that test their numerical agility, logical reasoning, and creative thinking.

Our school’s strategy was to foster a collaborative environment where students could learn from each other, sharing insights and strategies. This approach proved invaluable, as it not only prepared our team for the wide range of problems, they would face but also helped them develop vital soft skills such as teamwork, communication, and time management.

The competition was fierce, with schools from across the nation bringing their best and brightest, our school emerged as a strong contender. We are proud to announce that our team achieved emerged VICTORIOUS, securing top positions in several categories. This achievement is a testament to the hard work of our students and the guidance of their teachers.

Talent Show

The school is pleased to announce that we will be having an all- school talent show on April 11th if anyone interested in performing should sign up with Ms.Olusanya. More information regarding Purchasing tickets will be available soon.

Please remember to state your child’s full name, tutor group and reason for absence. If your child is unwell, please could you give a brief description of the symptoms.

All education research highlights how crucial it is to a child’s academic progress and wellbeing they attend school , on time, all of the time. Therefore, a reminder that it is important that families organise events or holidays outside of school time to ensure that their child is at school as often as possible.

The school works closely with the Education Welfare Officer at LCC, and we do seek to ensure that any requests for authorised absence are dealt with on a case-by-case basis, in a sensitive manner. However, the school can never authorise a family holiday or a trip abroad to visit family members during term time.

This academic year, families will have two weeks at the October half-term, three weeks at Christmas and two weeks at Easter for extended family holidays. Please do ensure that if booking holidays, they fall within the holiday periods.
