Principals Update

The Spring term is interesting this year because we have a 6-week block and then a 4-week block. I hope that everyone enjoys the week’s break to catch up with family and friends (and hopefully we may get a bit of sunshine along the way). When we return, there will be a pastoral focus on ‘sweating the small stuff’ in regards to uniform, attendance and punctuality. If you know that your child is missing pieces of their uniform, could I please encourage you to top up over the break.

When we return, our Year 11 pupils will immediately begin their second round of mock exams in preparation for their GCSE’s in May. This assessment round will highlight any gaps in learning and allow students time for focussed revision over the Easter break.

A very big shout out to Miss Savadia for leading our primary Rights Respecting Schools Award – we have gained the Bronze Award in only a few months. The RRSA puts children’s rights at the heart of school life in the UK; working with UNICEF, schools create safe and inspiring places to learn, where children are respected, their talents are nurtured and they are able to thrive.

Finally, a reminder that the school will be closed on Wednesday 28th February in the first week back after the holidays for an INSET training day for staff.

Community Activities Update

We are now a month into our successful launch of numerous evening and weekend ‘activity’ classes at Avanti Fields. We are supporting the coaches to build sustainable classes so they continue and are going to be offering more classes from April this year. We have had some great feedback from the participants so far and would encourage you all to try a class out if you have not done so already. There are a variety of classes to suit all ages and abilities including Dance, Yoga and Sports. Special Offers of £2 trial classes are available for Pickleball, Indoor Tennis and Multi Sports. If  there are any classes you would like to see or coaches you can recommend.  For more information please contact [email protected]

Primary News

It has been a fun-filled busy term! In the primary we have met Jungle Jo and her animal friends, Year 1 pupils have been on a trip to the castle, Nursery and Reception had parent workshops and to top it all off we have celebrated our great learning with a bouncy castle treat!

I hope all children have a wonderful half term break and I look forward to seeing you all back on Monday 26th February.

Attendance

Well done to Bluebell class for winning the attendance trophy, for having 94.7% attendance this week! We love to see so many children come to school every day and hope this high streak of attendance can continue! A big well done to Buttercup class for being so close too, with 94.6% attendance!

Bluebell and Buttercup class reached ‘Neptune’ this half-term…I wonder who will get there next! Will it be Snowdrop or Daisy class? The winners had so much fun bouncing away on the Bouncy Castle this term!

Attending school on time and regularly is highly important for your child’s development as it allows them to access our full curriculum. Thank you for your support as co-educators. I wonder who will be the attendance winners next term?

House Point Winners

Air are in the lead! Air won our house point competition this term, so Ms Thakore and Miss Savadia organised a special treat…a bouncy castle! The children jumped around and had so much fun! Before jumping with joy, they spoke about the importance of WHY we follow our core values and how they are going to show the core values next term. We are so proud of them. I wonder which house will win the competition next term?

RRSA Article of the Week

This week we focused on Article 24
Every child has the right to the best possible health. Governments must work to provide good quality health care, clean water, nutritious food and a clean environment so that children can stay healthy. Richer countries must help poorer countries achieve this.

Here is an activity you can do at home:
The focus surrounding this Article was Mental Health Awareness week, which was between 5-11th February. At home, you can talk to the children about who they can go to when they feel worried/anxious and come up with strategies they can use. You may also want to speak to the children about what they can do to look after their wellbeing e.g. mindfulness, spending time with family and friends etc. Can your child draw a picture of what they enjoy doing in their spare time?

Hand, foot and mouth disease

Hand, foot and mouth disease is a common infection that causes mouth ulcers and spots on the hands and feet.

It’s most common in young children – particularly those under 10 – but can affect older children and adults as well.

Hand, foot and mouth disease can be unpleasant, but it will usually clear up by itself within 7 to 10 days. You can normally look after yourself or your child at home.

The infection is not related to foot and mouth disease, which affects cattle, sheep and pigs.

Symptoms of hand, foot and mouth disease

The symptoms of hand, foot and mouth disease usually develop between 3 and 5 days after being exposed to the infection.

The first symptoms may include:

  • a high temperature (fever), usually around 38°C to 39°C (100.4-102.2°F)
  • a general sense of feeling unwell
  • loss of appetite
  • coughing
  • abdominal (tummy) pain
  • sore throat and mouth

Mouth ulcers

After 1 or 2 days, red spots appear on the tongue and inside the mouth.

These quickly develop into larger yellow-grey mouth ulcers with red edges.

The ulcers can be painful and make eating, drinking and swallowing difficult. They should pass within a week.

Spotty rash and blisters

Soon after the mouth ulcers appear, you’ll probably notice a rash made up of small, raised red spots on the skin.

These typically develop on the fingers, the backs or palms of the hand, the soles of the feet, and occasionally on the buttocks and groin.

The spots may then turn into small blisters with a grey centre.

The spots and blisters can sometimes be itchy or uncomfortable and typically last up to 10 days.

What to do if you or your child has hand, foot and mouth disease

If you have hand, foot and mouth disease, the best thing to do is to stay at home until you’re feeling better. There’s no cure for it, so you have to let it run its course. Please seek medical advice.

Absence

To report an absence to the school, parents should contact us by 8:00am (primary) and 8.30am (secondary)

Email: [email protected]
Phone: 0116 326 6813 (Option 1 to leave a voicemail)

Please remember to state your child’s full name, tutor group and reason for absence. If your child is unwell, please could you give a brief description of the symptoms.

All education research highlights how crucial it is to a child’s academic progress and wellbeing they attend school , on time, all of the time. Therefore, a reminder that it is important that families organise events or holidays outside of school time to ensure that their child is at school as often as possible.

The school works closely with the Education Welfare Officer at LCC, and we do seek to ensure that any requests for authorised absence are dealt with on a case-by-case basis, in a sensitive manner. However, the school can never authorise a family holiday or a trip abroad to visit family members during term time.

This academic year, families will have two weeks at the October half-term, three weeks at Christmas and two weeks at Easter for extended family holidays. Please do ensure that if booking holidays, they fall within the holiday periods.
