Principals Update

Yesterday the entire school had a fantastic time celebrating World Book Day! WBD is a growing event in our annual school calendar and we hope to see it become even bigger next year. Please read below more details of our WBD celebrations specific to primary and secondary.

Last night, while still in WBD costumes, the senior staff welcomed our incoming Year 6 pupils and outlined our transition programme for them and their families. Although it was a virtual event, it was lovely to see the confidence shine with our newest pupils who were brave enough to ask questions about what starting secondary school will be like.

Finally, today is International Women’s Day. Imaging a gender equal world. A world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination. A world that’s diverse, equitable, and inclusive. A world where difference is valued and celebrated. Together we can celebrate women’s achievements and raise awareness about discrimination. IWD belongs to everyone, everywhere.

Getting messy in the Nursery!

Thank you  so much for the PTFA who donated materials and hosted a gardening session for our Nursery pupils. We have been learning about the plant life cycle and how to care for them, so pupils were thrilled to share and apply their knowledge. Everyone enjoyed being outdoors and planting seeds for the garden. We look forward to observing the different stages of growth and seeing what blooms!

RRSA Article of the Week: This week we have focussed on: Article 31

Every child has the right to rest and leisure, to engage in play and recreational activities appropriate to the age of the child and to participate freely in cultural life and the arts.

Here is an activity you can do at home.

Make a list of the clubs your school runs at lunchtimes and after school. Is there something for everyone? Do you have a great idea for a new club? Think about how you could share your views about clubs at your school. Share your ideas with your friends and teachers.

Holi Event

We will be holding a ‘festival of colours’ event on 22nd March. We would like all children to experience the traditions of Holi with a festival of colours event. As the event involves the throwing of powdered paint, we are kindly asking for all children to come in old clothes, preferably white to show all the colours. If your child is in uniform that day, they will unfortunately not be able to participate.

Year 9 National Space Centre trip

7th February 2024

We took 12 year 9 students to the National Space Centre in Leicester. The event was to look at how Mathematics is used in a space context. There were students from 7 other schools in the City of Leicester.

The students had a brief introduction about the day and then getting to know each other. They then undertook a maths trail inside the centre, looking at the all the presentations on offer at the National Space Centre. The students had an informative time looking at all the props used by astronauts in space. This was certainly an eye opener for all the students there! Some of the skills here were how young learners from different schools worked together to complete the Maths trail.

The students then had to work together to produce a space ‘house’ that would hold resources for visiting astronauts on a space station. Students had to make their model with jelly babies and match sticks! Students were in inter school groups – so it was great that our students performed well students from other schools. Some of our students were in the winning space ‘house’ group.

After lunch, students took part in an activity based on how countries looked after scare resources in terms of recycling and costs. This was an activity based on other schools competing. Our students did really well, and they seemed to enjoy the experience of trying to allocate valuable resources in a competing world, taking into account populations, cost of resources, timelines to name a few ideas to consider.

After that, students were given the opportunity to attend a lecture from a university professor. The lecture was based on Einstein and his ideas on motion. This was quite a difficult type of learning – a new experience really, however quite a bit of maths concept was covered. This included.

  • Speed, distance, time including graphs.
  • Pythagoras Theorem
  • Motion in 2D plane
  • Velocity and average speed
  • Equations of motion.

All our students were a credit to the school and themselves and I know they had a lovely day out exploring maths in a space context.

Year 7/8 Girls Football

A successful football season for the girls as they made it through to the final in the 11 a-side competition after becoming East Leicester City Champions. Unfortunately we lost to Lancaster but the girls were incredible in their performances and achievements throughout the tournament.

KS4 Girls Football

A successful football season for the KS4 girls too as they made it through to the final in the 11 a-side competition after becoming East Leicester City Champions. Unfortunately we lost to Babington but the girls were incredible in their performances and achievements throughout the tournament.

Girls Futsal

Again both the teams (Year 8 and KS4) put in fantastic performances in the girls futsal tournaments. The KS4 girls got through to the final against Moat who we unfortunately lost out to just 1-0. The Year 8 team became joint first winners with Crown Hills who just pipped us to the finals on goal difference 14-11. But the girls should be immensely proud of their achievements with such incredible talent on the pitch.

Please remember to state your child’s full name, tutor group and reason for absence. If your child is unwell, please could you give a brief description of the symptoms.

All education research highlights how crucial it is to a child’s academic progress and wellbeing they attend school , on time, all of the time. Therefore, a reminder that it is important that families organise events or holidays outside of school time to ensure that their child is at school as often as possible.

The school works closely with the Education Welfare Officer at LCC, and we do seek to ensure that any requests for authorised absence are dealt with on a case-by-case basis, in a sensitive manner. However, the school can never authorise a family holiday or a trip abroad to visit family members during term time.

This academic year, families will have two weeks at the October half-term, three weeks at Christmas and two weeks at Easter for extended family holidays. Please do ensure that if booking holidays, they fall within the holiday periods.
