Principals Update

Today I had the pleasure of being part of the Head Boy/Head Girl interviews to confirm who will lead our student body for 2023-24. I am proud to announce that Pawandeep S as Head Boy and Anmol R as Head Girl for next year. Vabita P was successful in being appointed as Deputy Head Girl and Ahaan K as Deputy Head Boy. I want to say that the shortlisting and interviews were very difficult as we received a number of quality applications. I look forward to seeing them in action next year.

For the majority of our Year 11  students, today was the last day of GCSE examinations. Only 13 students have a Further Mathematics paper to complete next week. Staff and students alike are then looking forward to the Prom on Friday 23rd.

NHS Advise on Asthma/hay fever sufferers.

Please see below some important advice received from colleagues at University Hospitals of Leicester (UHL) to share with your school community regarding thunderstorms and asthma/hay fever sufferers.

If you could copy and paste this information and share via your usual communication channels with parents/carers, that would be greatly appreciated.

🌩️Thunderstorm Asthma

Whilst rare, thunderstorms can trigger severe asthma attacks in children (and adults) that are known to wheeze and in hayfever sufferers, as pollen is broken into even smaller pieces that can move deeper into the lungs.

There are lots of things you can do to help:

First – keep pollen at bay

Take antihistamine medicines if you or your child suffer from hay fever (symptoms include sneezing, cough, itchy eyes or skin, or runny nose). Keep windows closed, change your clothes and have a shower after being outside. You may find wearing a mask outdoors helps. Your local pharmacy can advise and provide the right antihistamine for your child.

Two – know your inhalers

Take your asthma steroid PREVENTER (usually a brown, pink or purple inhaler) inhaler regularly if you have been prescribed one. Always use a spacer, if you have one, to help medicine get to the lungs.

The blue inhaler can be used as needed if you have difficulty breathing. A child can have two puffs at a time (ideally using a spacer as in the videos below) – up to 10 puffs. If they improve and can talk in full sentences and can drink then you can monitor them at home.

If they continue to need more than 10 puffs in a four-hour period call 111 or your GP.

When to come to the emergency department:

If your child is still struggling after 10 puffs or any of the following symptoms occur, please attend the Emergency Department:

  • Too breathless to talk
  • Breathing rapidly
  • Floppy or unresponsive
  • Blue lips
  • Grunting when breathing
  • Muscles in neck and between ribs pulling when breathing

You can keep giving the blue inhaler until you get to the hospital.

Community Garden Fundraising

The Severn Trent funding we have secured pays for most of the infrastructure works needed for the project but we still have to route a water source to the site, buy lots of tools and equipment, seeds, plants and lots more. We have secured some additional funding from the AVIVA ‘Save our Wild Isles Community Fund’ but we need your help on this Crowdfunding Opportunity.

For the next 6 weeks Aviva will match every £1 donated to the project on a 1:2 basis, so if someone pledges £10, Aviva will add another £20 to the project, creating a total of £30 (Upto £5,000 and then on a 1:1 basis thereafter)

Any contribution large or small will be hugely appreciated, the link to donate is below. If you are considering making a large donation, please email us on [email protected]

Absence

To report an absence to the school, parents should contact us by 8:00am (primary) and 8.30am (secondary)

Email: [email protected]
Phone: 0116 326 6813 (Option 1 to leave a voicemail)

Please remember to state your child’s full name, tutor group and reason for absence. If your child is unwell, please could you give a brief description of the symptoms.

All education research highlights how crucial it is to a child’s academic progress and wellbeing they attend school , on time, all of the time. Therefore, a reminder that it is important that families organise events or holidays outside of school time to ensure that their child is at school as often as possible.

The school works closely with the Education Welfare Officer at LCC, and we do seek to ensure that any requests for authorised absence are dealt with on a case-by-case basis, in a sensitive manner. However, the school can never authorise a family holiday or a trip abroad to visit family members during term time.

This academic year, families will have two weeks at the October half-term, three weeks at Christmas and two weeks at Easter for extended family holidays. Please do ensure that if booking holidays, they fall within the holiday periods.
