Principals Update

A reminder that this week the school will be partially closed to Year 7 and 8 pupils due to NEU strike action on Wednesday 1st February.

The school will remain open for Nursery, Reception, Year 9, Year 10 and Year 11 students.

We will also remain open for a small number of identified students in Year 7 and 8, including students with SEND or Pupil Premium. Parents of these students have been emailed to confirm their child’s attendance.

  • For Primary students, our provision will remain unchanged, including provision for breakfast clubs and after school activities. Lunch and snacks will be provided as per usual.
  • For Year 9, 10 and 11 students there may be some changes to their provision.
    • If your child’s teacher is not striking, they will attend their regular, timetabled lessons.
    • If your child’s teacher is striking, they will be supervised by another member of staff, the senior leadership team or a teaching assistant. Appropriate subject specific work will be provided during their timetabled lesson.
    • Lunch will be provided as per usual, however lunch timings may change to allow all students to eat in the first lunch sitting.
    • The school will be running a regular school day, from 8:30am – 3:30pm.
    • Beaver Bus service will continue as normal.
  • For Year 7 and 8 students remaining at home, the school will be sharing a variety of general revision and online resources that your child could complete during the day. There will not be any remote teaching provided on the day. Students are encouraged to follow their normal timetable and engage in subject related independent work.

In addition to 1st February, there are three more strike days planned by the NEU, Wednesday 1st March, Wednesday 15th March and Thursday 16th March. I will keep you informed of the possible impact of these days closer to the time.

As we approach the mid-way point of this term, I want to share with you more details about up-and-coming events.

Reading week

This will take place the week beginning 27th February. As part of this week, we will have a school book fair, a storyteller, competitions and various reading events including a dress up event on the 2nd March. We are encouraging all children to come to school on the 2nd of March dressed up as their favourite book character.

Book fair

The scholastic book fair will be open on the first two days of reading week. This is our first fair with the company and so is a small event, however still exciting for the children. Come along with your child to explore the books on sale. Cash payments only.

Please note: you can use your child’s £1.00 book voucher at this fair.

Opening dates and times:

Midday slot for nursery am parents only 10.45am- 11.15am 10.45am- 11.15am

Holi event- 8th March

This event is an additional date for your diary. We would like all children to experience the traditions of Holi with a festival of colours event. As the event involves the throwing of powdered paint, we are kindly asking for all children to come in old clothes, preferably white to show all the colours. If your child is in uniform that day, they will not be able to participate.

Nursery morning children only

As the event is taking place in the afternoon, we are inviting nursery AM children to the event, however parents will be expected to remain on school grounds during the event. We will have a tea and coffee room for all AM parents who wish to attend. This will be at 2.00pm.

Camps International

We a delighted to be working with Camps International, offering our students the opportunity to join us on a 4 week expedition to Peru in July 2024.

This week, students in Year 9, 10 and 11 will be attending assemblies to find out more about this opportunity. They will be bringing a letter home with further details of the expedition, what they will be doing, the cost and how they can begin to fundraise for the trip. Avanti Fields is planning to run an international expedition every two years, and will always be happy to welcome back Year 11 leavers to join us. For this first expedition, we are jointly planning the event with Avanti House students.

Parents are invited to attend an information session on Wednesday 8th February at 6:30pm to hear more about this opportunity.

Year 9 Boys Football Final

The Y9 boys played Madani in the East Leicester cup final. After conceding a goal in the opening minutes through a penalty the boys had an upward battle to stay in the game. After showing fantastic resilience and teamwork the team managed to equalise in the second half. The game ended 1-1 and went to penalties. Unfortunately, we lost on the final kick and as you can imagen the boys were devastated. We should celebrate and recognise that the boys have done an outstanding job the reach the final and that we will come back better next year.

Year 7 & 8 Boys Indoor Cricket

The Y7&8 have started their indoor cricket campaign in style. They played Soar Vally in their first fixture and after an outstanding batting performance by Jenil and Shiv we reached the 67 targets in the first 5 overs. We then went onto beat Rushey Mead which will have boosted the boy’s confidence because last year we lost in the outdoor fixture. We hare due to play at Crown Hills in the next round in February. I am hopeful that the boys can go far this year. Well done!

Mr Backhouse

Year 9 & 10 Girls Indoor Cricket

The girls did Avanti proud as they threw themselves into the tournament with very little practice. We played Rushey Mead and only lost marginally by a matter of runs. We played Crown Hills next and they were a stronger side but we persevered. Our fielding was brilliant with Rahi and Anaiya both managing to take two wickets in their overs, Drashtee making two catches and Mahek with her flawless wicket keeping. We just needed to make a few more runs but we will practice our batting skills and improve for next year. We must mention Vrishti who literally slid into the crease to keep herself in when batting. It was one of the many highlights from the matches.

NSPCC Business Challenge

A huge well done to some of our student leaders who took part in the NSPCC business challenge where they had £20 to think of an idea to raise as much money as possible. They raised a total of £535 and we were the first school to take part in the initiative.

Absence

To report an absence to the school, parents should contact us by 8:00am (primary) and 8.30am (secondary)

Email: [email protected]
Phone: 0116 326 6813 (Option 1 to leave a voicemail)

Please remember to state your child’s full name, tutor group and reason for absence. If your child is unwell, please could you give a brief description of the symptoms.

All education research highlights how crucial it is to a child’s academic progress and wellbeing they attend school , on time, all of the time. Therefore, a reminder that it is important that families organise events or holidays outside of school time to ensure that their child is at school as often as possible.

The school works closely with the Education Welfare Officer at LCC, and we do seek to ensure that any requests for authorised absence are dealt with on a case-by-case basis, in a sensitive manner. However, the school can never authorise a family holiday or a trip abroad to visit family members during term time.

This academic year, families will have two weeks at the October half-term, three weeks at Christmas and two weeks at Easter for extended family holidays. Please do ensure that if booking holidays, they fall within the holiday periods.
