Principals Update

This week we have launched an exciting opportunity to our Year 9, 10 and 11 students – an overseas expedition to Peru in the summer of 2024. From my professional conversations with colleagues working at other schools, I am please to be able to offer this opportunity at Avanti Fields School. I know that the price may seem very high, however, we are launching with over 18 months preparation time. If your child was interested after the launch assemblies, I would strongly encourage you to attend the parent information evening next Wednesday evening, 08/02, at 6:30pm. The staff from Camps International will be there to provide key information about the expedition, ways in which they support students to fundraise for their expedition and what the next steps would be should you want to sign up. The following week, on Thursday 16th February, we will be holding the sign-up session for interested pupils during school.

This week, there has been disruption due to the strike action, however I am pleased that we were able to remain partially open for the majority of our students. There are still talks between the NEU and the government and I hope that a resolution to the union concerns are resolved soon. Should they not be before the next planned date of Wednesday 1st March, the school will review our risk assessments and communicate again to parents and families about our arrangements. There will be a consideration of changing which year groups are to be closed to ensure that the impact on our students education is not too disrupted.

Next week the school will taking part in our annual Challenge Partners review. Challenge Partners is an educational charity that works through collaboration between schools to improve the education system and benefit children. We have been part of Challenge Partners for a number of years and engage in their annual review process to ensure that we are providing the best possible provision for your children. There will be no interruption to the regular school day, however we will have a team of 5 external reviewers onsite from Wednesday to Friday.

Finally, you may be aware that we encourage our pupils to read a daily affirmation that are linked to the six core principles of The Avanti Way. I thought it would be nice to share the Weekend Affirmation, as it doesn’t often get read at school.

Absence

To report an absence to the school, parents should contact us by 8:00am (primary) and 8.30am (secondary)

Email: [email protected]
Phone: 0116 326 6813 (Option 1 to leave a voicemail)

Please remember to state your child’s full name, tutor group and reason for absence. If your child is unwell, please could you give a brief description of the symptoms.

All education research highlights how crucial it is to a child’s academic progress and wellbeing they attend school , on time, all of the time. Therefore, a reminder that it is important that families organise events or holidays outside of school time to ensure that their child is at school as often as possible.

The school works closely with the Education Welfare Officer at LCC, and we do seek to ensure that any requests for authorised absence are dealt with on a case-by-case basis, in a sensitive manner. However, the school can never authorise a family holiday or a trip abroad to visit family members during term time.

This academic year, families will have two weeks at the October half-term, three weeks at Christmas and two weeks at Easter for extended family holidays. Please do ensure that if booking holidays, they fall within the holiday periods.
