Principals Update

This week we have gone out to consultation with parents regarding the changes to the timings of the school day and around parents evening arrangements. This consultation would only affect secondary pupils, however, we have sent the consultation to our entire school community and the incoming Year 7 families to ensure we engage with all relevant stakeholders. Our staff have been consulted prior to sharing with families.

Secondary Consultation on Timings to School Day

Our Year 11 students have made a good start to their GCSE exams. The students are very focused and are coming prepared for each session. I want to thank all staff who have supported the students with their learning and revision, and for those delivering master class sessions.

This week has seen a variety of activities and sessions run for our students. Year 7 and 8 pupils had knife crime awareness workshops, in line with our planned safeguarding calendar for the year. Students in Year 9 attended a visit to the University of Leicester, organised by the Spanish department on Wednesday and next week the English department are leading on a visit for Year 8 pupils.

Our primary parents have attended the final parents evening event of the year. It was lovely to see parents engaging with their children’s books and talking about the learning that has taken place this year.

University of Leicester trip

This week, Year 9 students took part in a Spanish trip to the University of Leicester. Students had the opportunity to engage in a revision skills session and experience an interactive lecture where they were able to practise their language skills. Students had the chance to learn more about careers and benefits related to studying languages. The visit also included a question and answer session with student ambassadors about their experiences at University. Finally, they received a tour of the campus and were able to learn about the various courses on offer to study.

Students came back inspired about the advantages of higher education and the many opportunities available to students who study Modern Languages. The students were all a credit to Avanti Fields and we hope to offer similar visits in the future.

Community Garden Fundraising

The Severn Trent funding we have secured pays for most of the infrastructure works needed for the project but we still have to route a water source to the site, buy lots of tools and equipment, seeds, plants and lots more. We have secured some additional funding from the AVIVA ‘Save our Wild Isles Community Fund’ but we need your help on this Crowdfunding Opportunity.

For the next 6 weeks Aviva will match every £1 donated to the project on a 1:2 basis, so if someone pledges £10, Aviva will add another £20 to the project, creating a total of £30 (Upto £5,000 and then on a 1:1 basis thereafter)

Any contribution large or small will be hugely appreciated, the link to donate is below. If you are considering making a large donation, please email us on [email protected]

Absence

To report an absence to the school, parents should contact us by 8:00am (primary) and 8.30am (secondary)

Email: [email protected]
Phone: 0116 326 6813 (Option 1 to leave a voicemail)

Please remember to state your child’s full name, tutor group and reason for absence. If your child is unwell, please could you give a brief description of the symptoms.

All education research highlights how crucial it is to a child’s academic progress and wellbeing they attend school , on time, all of the time. Therefore, a reminder that it is important that families organise events or holidays outside of school time to ensure that their child is at school as often as possible.

The school works closely with the Education Welfare Officer at LCC, and we do seek to ensure that any requests for authorised absence are dealt with on a case-by-case basis, in a sensitive manner. However, the school can never authorise a family holiday or a trip abroad to visit family members during term time.

This academic year, families will have two weeks at the October half-term, three weeks at Christmas and two weeks at Easter for extended family holidays. Please do ensure that if booking holidays, they fall within the holiday periods.
